Now is the perfect time to dabble in the medieval timeperiod. As summer approaches
there are more and more events happening close to our area. Your only task is to find
one that fits your schedule and your travel expectations.
Once you have chosen your event you need to plan ahead. How will you get there, will you be staying overnight, what will you eat, and what will you wear?
Arrival at events is rarely dictated by a rigid timetable. Many over-night events have an informal evening before the event really takesoff, allowing people to set up, unwind, and socialize at will. If you are taking a class, please try to arrive before the time required. Remember to plan extra time for ferries and traffic. If transportation is a problem please contact other SCA members; there are often empty spaces available in other vehicles.
If you are staying overnight plan for your own comfort. Bed and break-fast guests always bring their own bedding. If you are camping, bring all your supplies. A further list of specific SCA camping supplies is available from the chatelaine. Don't forget your night attire!
Almost every SCA event includes a feast; your feast gear may be your most used acquisition. In times of old the guests brought their own knives to a feast and ate off of bread "trenchers". We still bring our own knives, as well as spoons, goblets, mugs, bowls and plates. Look for material that fits into the illusion of the middle ages: wood, ceramic, some glass. A napkin and candle will complete your place setting nicely. * Most events do not provide alcohol. If you wish to drink discretely bring your own, along with a period vessel to pour/drink from.
No SCA event would be complete without the pageantry of colourful medieval clothing. Everyone is expected to make an attempt to appear as authentic as is possible (and convenient). If you don't havee check with local costume rentals and with other SCA members. The shire has an office called "Gold Key" which loans garb tonew members at little or no cost. Please make these arrangements ahead of time.
Many events have things planned all day, but you can also bring your own contributions of medieval games, books, handwork, or science. We all enrich the whole with our personal input. Lunch is rarely provided, so pack something to eat; simple fare of breads, cheeses, meats and fruits were very common in the middle ages.
SCA members love to talk so ask all the questions you can think of, both before the event and while you're there. Enjoy!
